Shift Manager – Stevedoring / Port Operations

We're looking for a practical, hands-on Shift Manager to help lead our stevedoring and port operations team in Newcastle.

This role suits someone who enjoys being close to the action, leading crews, solving problems on the job and keeping operations moving safely and efficiently.

About the role

You'll be responsible for coordinating day-to-day shift operations across vessel loading and discharge, cargo handling, labour and equipment allocation, and shift handovers. You'll work closely with stevedores, leading hands, supervisors, customers, vessel crews and port stakeholders to deliver safe and reliable outcomes.

This is a full-time, permanent shift-based role. The work is vessel-dependent and may include nights, weekends, public holidays and travel from time to time. A lifestyle roster and attractive benefits are offered.

What you'll be doing

• Leading crews in a safe, respectful and practical way

• Planning and coordinating labour, equipment and shift activities

• Monitoring vessel progress, productivity and cargo flow

• Managing issues as they arise, including weather, delays or equipment breakdowns

• Supporting a strong safety culture across the shift

• Communicating clearly with customers, crews, agents and internal teams

• Completing shift reports, handovers and operational documentation

About you

You'll likely have experience in stevedoring, port operations, bulk handling, logistics, maritime, heavy industry or another high-risk operational environment.

Australian work rights are required for this position.

You'll bring:

• Previous supervisory or leadership experience

• A strong safety-first mindset

• Good communication and people management skills

• The ability to make decisions under pressure

• Practical planning and problem-solving ability

• Sound computer skills, including Outlook, Word and Excel

• A current driver licence

• Flexibility to work shift-based and vessel-dependent hours

High-risk licences such as forklift, crane, rigging, dogging, loader or EWP would be well regarded, but are not essential.
